Gulmarg is closely associated with skiing due to its snow-blanketed slopes and also hosts the annual Gulmarg Snow Festival, featuring activities like sledding, ice skating, and snowboarding. A favorite honeymoon retreat, it attracts visitors with serene water bodies such as Alpather Lake and Ningle Nallah, set against majestic mountains, along with Seven Springs that offers sweeping views of the lush valley.

Often combined with Gulmarg are destinations like Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Katra to truly experience the beauty of Kashmir. Day-1 Gulmarg Gondola

The Gulmarg Gondola is the second highest and second longest cable car system in the world and the main highlight of Gulmarg. Operating in two stages, it transports nearly 600 passengers per hour to and from Apharwat Peak, the center for most winter sports activities in the region.

Phase 1 carries visitors from Gulmarg Resort to Kongdoori Station, the mid-point. Beginning at an altitude of about 2,990 meters, it rises vertically by around 400 meters. Every hour, nearly 1,500 people are taken up to approximately 3,100 meters, where several beginner-friendly skiing slopes are available. Phase 2 links Kongdoori Mountain to Apharwat Peak, climbing roughly 1,330 vertical meters to reach close to 4,000 meters and accommodating around 600 passengers per hour. From the final station, a 30-minute trek leads to the summit, from where the Line of Control (LOC) can be seen.

Day-2 Alpather Lake

Alpather Lake is a high-altitude lake located between the twin peaks of Apharwat Peak in Gulmarg. Often referred to as the “Frozen Lake,” it stays entirely frozen from November through June. The lake is especially famous for its one-day trek from Gulmarg, covering a distance of around 13 kilometers.

The trek to Alpather Lake is moderately challenging and follows the route: Gulmarg – Khilanmarg – Apharwat Ridge – Alpather Lake. In winter, the lake presents a magical sight when frozen solid, with ducks seen walking over the ice instead of swimming. In contrast, during summer, the surroundings come alive with vibrant flowers and lush greenery, enhancing its natural charm.

Day-3 Apharwat Peak

Apharwat Peak, rising to an altitude of 4,200 meters above sea level, is one of the most stunning locations in Gulmarg. Located close to the Line of Control, the area experiences heavy snowfall and rain, keeping it snow-covered for much of the year. This peak is the central spot for winter sports in Gulmarg.

Surrounded by snowy mountains and pristine white meadows, Apharwat Peak offers a perfect setting for honeymooners and stands out as one of the most scenic tourist attractions near Srinagar.

Day-4 Skiing in Gulmarg

Gulmarg, a scenic hill town in Jammu and Kashmir, is rapidly gaining fame for its excellent ski slopes. Suitable for both beginners and expert skiers, the town hosts multiple ski operators and training institutes to guide enthusiasts.

Gulmarg receives extraordinary amounts of snow, rivaling famous ski regions like Utah and Niseko. While exact figures are not consistently recorded, the average yearly snowfall is estimated at around 14 meters, with some years, such as 2004, witnessing nearly 20 meters of snow.

Day-5 Maharani Temple

The Maharani Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is perched atop a small hillock visible from nearly every part of Gulmarg. Its striking red roof stands out beautifully against the surrounding green meadows. Also referred to as the Rani Temple or Mohineshwar Shivalaya, the temple gained additional fame as the location where the iconic Bollywood song “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar” was filmed.

Day-6 Drung Waterfall

The Drung Waterfall is a well-known tourist spot situated in the Tangmarg tehsil of Gulmarg. Nestled among towering mountains, this cascading waterfall creates a breathtaking view. During winter, the waterfall freezes completely due to the frigid temperatures, making it a must-see attraction in the region.

Day-7 Strawberry Valley

Strawberry Valley is a hidden gem in Gulmarg, largely untouched by tourism and retaining its pristine charm. The green meadows dotted with ripening red strawberries resemble a scene straight out of the Garden of Eden. With clear blue skies above and verdant fields stretching around, visiting Strawberry Valley offers a truly captivating experience.

Summer is the peak season when the strawberries are ready for harvest. Visitors can wander among the rows of lush plantations, marvel at nature’s beauty, or enjoy a picnic amidst the scenery. The valley also holds a nostalgic Bollywood connection, as its tranquility, vibrant landscapes, and natural allure have made it a filming location for several movies in the past.v

Day-8 Ningle Nallah

Ningle Nallah is located about 10 kilometers from Gulmarg. This mountain stream is surrounded on all sides by snow-covered peaks and lush green pastures. Its waters, sourced from the melting ice of Apharwat Peak and Alpather Lake, make it a perfect spot for picnics and camping.

Flowing through valleys and mountains, Ningle Nallah eventually merges with the Jhelum River. It is an excellent destination for family outings, especially enjoyable for those traveling with children.

Day-9 St Mary's Church

Saint Mary’s Church, standing tall for over a century, is a striking example of Victorian architecture located near the Gulmarg Golf Course. This historic church offers a glimpse into the architectural heritage that India is famed for and is reached only by a trekking route. It is especially noted for its intricate stained glass artwork.

Resembling a quaint countryside chapel, St. Mary’s Church is built with grey stone walls. Its charm is most captivating during winter, when the surrounding snow adds a magical touch to the structure.

Day-10 Seven Springs

Seven Springs is a picturesque stream famous for its seven distinct water outlets. Perched on a hillock close to Kongdori, the springs provide breathtaking vistas of the Gulmarg and Srinagar valleys. Visitors can reach this enchanting spot via a gondola ride from the base of Apharwat Peak, enjoying sweeping views of snow-covered peaks and the vibrant valley below.
