Chakreshwar Temple in Srinagar
About Tour
The Sharika Chakreshwar Temple is located atop Hari Parbat, a prominent hill in Srinagar city. Hari Parbat, also known as Kooh-e-Sulaimaani, overlooks Srinagar, the largest city and summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The hill is home to several temples, with the principal shrine dedicated to Goddess Sharika, the presiding deity of Kashmir. The temple is regarded as both a Siddha Peetha and a Shakti Peetha, making it highly sacred among devotees. Navratri is celebrated here every year with great devotion and enthusiasm.
The Goddess is revered as the Cosmic Mother and is believed to embody solar energy expressed through seven aspects — the seven worlds, the seven colours of light, and the seven Rishis of Vedic knowledge. Here, the divine energy is symbolized in the form of radiant solar power.
Near Hari Parbat, there is a Gurudwara devoted to Guru Hargobind. The ancient fort wall encircling the hill stretches for about 5 kilometers and stands nearly 10 meters high. It features two historic entrances — Sanghi Darwaza and Kathi Darwaza — with Kathi Darwaza serving as the primary gateway, beautifully decorated with Persian inscriptions.
Inside the fort premises is the temple dedicated to Goddess Sharika. Just outside the southern gate stands the shrine called Chatti Padshahi, which is associated with the sixth Sikh Guru.
The hill rises around 122 meters above the valley floor and is encircled by almond orchards. In the spring and summer seasons, these orchards become lively picnic spots where people come to enjoy the refreshing climate and picturesque surroundings.
