Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Shankaracharya Temple is one of the pious religious landmarks of Srinagar. It is named after the renowned philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who is believed to have visited Kashmir during his travels. The temple occupies a prominent hilltop position, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Srinagar city and the surrounding landscape.

Also referred to as the Jyeshteshwara Temple, it can be reached by climbing a flight of 243 steps. The shrine attracts a large number of Hindu pilgrims, especially during the Amarnath Yatra season, when devotees visit in great numbers to seek blessings.

The Shankaracharya Temple stands on a 20-foot-high octagonal platform that upholds its square structure. Inside, the shrine contains a small, dimly lit circular sanctum. The roof of this inner chamber rests on four octagonal pillars, which enclose a basin housing the Shivalinga, depicted with a serpent coiled around it.

  • The temple is open till 8:00pm but the entry of the cars in the parking area is only allowed up to 5:00 pm.
  • Since 243 steps have to climbed to reach Shankaracharya Temple, it is advised to wear comfortable footwears and carry water along.
