The Jama Masjid in Srinagar
About Tour
Situated in Nowhatta, popularly known as Downtown, Jama Masjid Srinagar is the largest mosque in the Kashmir Valley and one of the prominent attractions in Srinagar. Its central location, grand architectural design, vast courtyard, and deep historical as well as religious significance make it a prominent landmark in the city. Every Friday, thousands of worshippers gather here to offer congregational prayers.
The Jamia Masjid Srinagar was originally constructed in 1402 under the patronage of Sultan Sikandar. The present structure was rebuilt in 1672 on the orders of Aurangzeb. Over the centuries, the mosque suffered extensive damage due to fires, having caught fire three times, with the last incident occurring during Aurangzeb’s reign.
The architecture of the Jama Masjid Srinagar reflects elements of the Indo-Saracenic style. Its impressive courtyard, supported by 370 wooden pillars, greatly enhances the mosque’s grandeur and appeal. The structure features three main entrances on the northern, southern, and eastern sides, along with three turrets rising above tall deodar wood columns. Spacious in design, the mosque has the capacity to accommodate up to 33,333 worshippers at one time.
